Character/Set Breakdown

CAST LIST

DIEGO: High Baritone.  A young, super sweet idealistic soldier.  His idealism makes him very naive.

CHIMINE:  Alto/Mezzo.  At first a hopeful, idealistic, sweet princess, she takes on an edge of bitterness after being imprisoned in a tower for two years.  Strong.  A born leader.

KING: Tenor.  An egomaniac, with all the not-so-hidden insecurities that go with that.  He is allergic to the dogs.  Loves to torment, and is very good at it.

SMALL DOG:  Soprano.  The slightly goofy, very excitable dog.  She is the dog that fetches.  Eyes as large as fists.  Pulls in line with the others to be serious when she should.  She is a masked actor, and also plays the FIRST NOBLE, FIRST PEASANT, FEMALE GUARD ONE, and various other PEASANTS.

MEDIUM DOG: Mezzo.  The leader dog.  Slightly snide.  Eyes as large as saucers.  She is the thinker of the dogs.  She is also the dog that transports people and such.  Also a masked actor, she plays LESSER NOBLEMAN, BEGGAR PEASANT, PEASANT TWO in the gold scene, and various other PEASANTS.

LARGE DOG: Alto- or Tenor.  The dog of few words.  The muscle dog.  Huge.  She has eyes the size of plates.  Also a masked actor, she plays FARMER, THIRD PEASANT, FEMALE GUARD TWO,  PEASANT ONE in the gold scene, and various other PEASANTS.

CAPTAIN: Baritone.  A tousled, miserable man who finds humor and satisfaction in what he’s had to live through.  Kind of enjoys being thrown out of city, as it keeps him from the King.  Also plays EXECUTIONER.

NOTE:  Any and all crowds referred to are meant to be actively played by the audience.  The original production timed in at one hour and used seven actors.  The second production combined the Large Dog and Captain.  The vocal parts can be ordered either way.

SET DESCRIPTION

If budget allows, the set should consist of three archways on three small platforms center, left and right, slightly overlapping.  You can utilize simple pull down drops (Like window shades) to indicate changing from the woods to the castle and such.  Various rocks, basically rehearsal cubes, are used to define the tower, and to be building materials when called for, and other movable scenery.  There should be a tree that can be placed at center.  It should be one sided and able to rotate, with a hole in the front large enough for someone to go through.  You may also want a throne. Ideally, this show would be done in three-quarter thrust, so there would be additional vom entrances.  If budget restricts, the show can easily be done without the arches.
